JOB PLACEMENT

Employment Services. JVS provides individualized job development, resume preparation, vocational planning, application procedures, sign language interpreting, job placement and follow-up services. (312) 673-3439; (847) 412-4300; (630) 889-0548.

Supported Employment. Participants are assisted in finding employment in the community and are provided with job readiness training, individualized job placement and job coaching and support, as needed, to maintain employment. (312) 673-3439; (847) 412-4300.

Career Connectors. Career Connectors is designed for at-risk young people ages 14-21, who experience a challenge that may affect their ability to gain or keep employment. The program takes a unique approach to serving the youth of northern Cook County by working with area schools and community agencies, to offer the most comprehensive collaboration of services available. While serving youth both in and out of school, Career Connectors staff works with them to assess their employment strengths and goals: further education, vocational skills training, job placement and retention, volunteerism, work experience or more. CareerTracks. A program for young Jewish adults, ages 18-24, who are having difficulty making the transition from high school to employment or sustaining a college education. Click here for more information.

youthAbility. The youthAbility program places at-risk youth (ages 14-21) residing in northern Cook County into volunteer service opportunities. The program partners with highly regarded service agencies in the community, connecting youth to part-time and full-time volunteer experiences that match their unique interests and needs. Youth who participate have the opportunity to build new skills and explore career options, while giving back to the community. JVS staff will provide support as they adjust to a new work environment and learn new tasks, monitor individuals’ progress and assess and adjust site accommodations. (847) 412-4300.


Ticket to Work. JVS Chicago, as an Employment Network, serves qualified individuals with disabilities who desire employment services under the Social Security Administration's Ticket to Work (TTW) program. Interested ticket holders can contact JVS to schedule an appointment. A JVS Employment Specialist will introduce the ticket holder to the wide array of employment services outlined under Disability Services. Once the ticket is assigned, an individual plan will be designed to assist the ticket holder to reach his/her employment goal. (312) 673-3439.

Employer Services.The JVS team of Employment and Training Specialists assists employers in fulfilling your hiring needs. We offer:

  • Resumes of qualified and screened job candidates with disabilities.
  • Sign Language interpreting services which include interviews, seminars, training sessions, business luncheons/banquets, staff meetings, and staff performance reviews.
  • Lectures and media presentations on the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it affects your business.
  • Information on accessing Work Opportunity Tax Credits.
  • No cost or low cost ways to modify work tools and equipment to assist individuals with disabilities.

E-LEARNING


e-Learning. A program for youth with disabilities, ages 14-21, who live in north and northwest Cook County, who are trying to improve their knowledge and basic math and/or reading skills. They may be attempting to earn a GED or gain admittance into a post-secondary vocational or educational program that demands a higher level of basic skill knowledge. While enrolled, each youth receives a laptop computer for his/her own usage. Program materials are contained in an online site. A JVS counselor/instructor meets with each student at pre-arranged times, working one-on-one, monitoring progress and making new assignments. (847) 412 -4300

SKILLS TRAINING, WORK TRAINING, AND REHABILITATION SERVICES


JVS offers specialized work preparation programs to people with disabilities seeking employment. Skills training programs provide classroom and job site experience, vocational counseling, job placement services, and job coaching to maintain competitive employment. Various programs are funded by city, state and federal departments. (773) 761-9000.

SKILLS TRAINING

Homemaker/Health Care Aide. In a classroom setting, students develop the skills necessary for occupations such as Health Care Aide, Homemaker, Companion and Child Care provider. A field site experience is provided. (312) 454-9002.

Business Services. Participants receive on-the-job skills training in copy operations, supply room, mail and warehouse services and are paid while in training at a variety of state and federal governmental sites. (312) 454-9002.

Janitorial. Participants learn janitorial skills including office cleaning, floor and carpet maintenance, use of industrial cleaning supplies and machinery, and safety techniques. Participants are paid during training which takes place in the classroom, at a work center and at a variety of state and federal governmental sites. (312) 454-9002.

Retail Services. In partnership with the Walgreen Company, this program prepares people for retail services occupations. In 2 1/2 weeks, students gain practical knowledge in cash management, customer service, cash register/scanners, and stock work. Graduates will qualify for retail positions at Walgreens or other retail companies. (312) 673-3439.

CO-OP

Cooperative Community Based Program for Young Adults with Developmental Disabilities (Co-Op). Created by JVS, in collaboration with Keshet, the Co-Op provides to developmentally disabled Jewish adults over the age of 21, the opportunity for productive work, vocational adjustment, social interaction and activities and adaptive living skills training to help facilitate the transition to a new level of independence. The program consists of two primary integrated components: vocational training, which builds each participant's job skills through specialized work at the JVS Sampson-Katz Center; and a social and adaptive living skills program run by Keshet at the Horwich JCC. Young adults, who spend five mornings a week at Sampson-Katz, doing assembly and contract packaging, receive a paycheck for their efforts. Additional fees are required. Keshet Candles are packaged by young adults with disabilities working in the Keshet/JVS Co-Op. Your purchase helps these young adults play an integral role in our community and assists them in becoming active members fulfilling important responsibilities. WORK SERVICES

Work Evaluation. Individualized vocational plans are developed through interest and vocational aptitude testing. (773) 761-9000.

Work Training. Following an individual plan, participants improve work skills and interpersonal relations in a work center. Work centers provide training using activities such as shrink wrapping, packaging, and light assembly. (773) 761-9000 or e-mail jvsdisability@jvschicago.org.

REHABILITATION SERVICES

Psycho-Social Rehabilitation. The recovering mentally ill who are eligible for state funding participate in work focused programming. Those who may not be ready for competitive jobs receive training in socially acceptable behavior, self-care competence and pre-vocational skills. (773) 761-9000; (312) 454-9002; (773) 493-3400.

Residential Services. Apartment living services are provided to adults recovering from mental illness and relocating from psychiatric facilities to community living. Intermittent support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (773) 761-9000; (773) 493-3400.
