VOLUNTEERISM
The breadth of JVS programming is enhanced by the tireless efforts of our volunteers. Their contributions are as diverse as the wide array of services that JVS provides: mentors who share business expertise with budding entrepreneurs; professionals, having achieved success in their respective fields, who review loan applications for small business start-ups; individual tutors in vocational English who help newly arrived refugees prepare for the world of work; experts who impart job search information and strategies to unemployed middle managers and executives; and volunteers who perform clerical functions.

JVS and our clients benefit greatly from the time, energy and knowledge they give. Their participation, which complements our core services, is essential in helping us maximize resources and has become an integral part of our mission. Listed below are some of JVS’ current volunteer opportunities:

NEWLY ARRIVED REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT PROGRAMS
Volunteers assist the staff and work directly with clients in tutoring and assisting refugees from the former Soviet Union and all over the world to adjust to the community. JVS volunteers tutor new Americans in English language proficiency and basic computer skills and provide mentoring. Classes meet Monday - Thursday in the morning and evening. PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS
Members of the business community serve as expert panelists in programs for unemployed middle and upper-level management and executive clients. They also provide business start-up expertise, mentoring, technical assistance and lead workshops for entrepreneurs. For information call (312) 673-3443 or e-mail jvsjen@jvschicago.org.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Volunteers are needed to help students attain higher education. Interview applicants and complete evaluations between March 1 and April 30, 2010. You will need interviewing experience and should be able to evaluate a candidate’s plan, financial situation and circumstances. Prior experience in counseling or human resources desirable.

EMPLOYER SERVICES
Call employers and develop job listings for our unique employment site. Give employers information on posting their open positions on the site at no cost.

JOB SEARCH WORKSHOPS
Facilitate small workshops targeting all aspects of a job campaign: mock interviews, resume support, cover letters, networking, image, industry specific trends and strategies, specific issue that impact a career. Experience in counseling or human resources desirable.

COMPUTER SUPPORT
Volunteers are needed to teach individuals how to use the hottest new tools in job hunting: LinkedIn, Twitter, Social Networking

CLERICAL
Assist staff with clerical duties such as filing, mailing and answering phones.

WEB DESIGN
Create the web pages and develop the design for a new website that effectively communicates the agency image and mission. Be involved in all planning and technical aspects from concept to completion. Mastery of language and all current requirements and past experience required. Submit samples.

MICROENTERPRISE LOANS
Retired bankers and loan officers are needed the help clients complete loan application forms for SBA Community Express Loans. To volunteer call (312) 673-3430.

SENIOR AIDES PROGRAM
Retired volunteers with experience in business or human resources work with seniors, ages 55 and up, assisting them in writing resumes and improving their job search strategies and interviewing skills. Volunteering takes place at 216 West Jackson, Chicago with a required commitment of at least four hours a week. For information call (312) 673-3428.

YOUTHABILITY
The JVS youthAbility program partners with highly regarded service organizations to recruit and match youth (ages 17-24) with disabilities residing in northern Cook County into volunteer positions.
